RESUMO

Despite an increase in global research on the subject of Pemphigus, which seriously affects patient health and quality of life, there is no bibliometric research on this subject in literature to date. The aim of this study was to conduct a holistic analysis of scientific articles published on Pemphigus, using bibliometric methods. Articles published on the subject of Pemphigus between 1980 and 2021 were downloaded from the web of science (WoS) database and analyzed using various statistical methods. To determine trend subjects, collaboration between countries, and the most effective studies with citation analyses, visual network maps were obtained with bibliometric analyses. A total of 3034 articles were analyzed. The 3 countries making the greatest contribution to literature were the USA (n:831, 27.3%), Japan (n:402, 13.2%), and Germany (n:221, 7.2%). The 3 most active institutions were Keio University (n:163, 5.3%), Kurume University (n:130, 4.2%) and Tel Aviv University (n:107, 3.5%). The 3 journals publishing the most articles were the British Journal of Dermatology (n: 88), Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (n:171) and the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (n:143). The 3 leading journals according to the mean number of citations (NC) per article (citation count: CC) were the New England Journal of Medicine (CC:246), the Lancet (CC:143) and the Journal of Cell Biology (CC:133). The author with the most articles published was Hashimoto Takashi (n.168, 5.5%). As a result of cluster analysis, it was seen that 9 different main clusters had been studied on Pemphigus subjects to date (1: desmoglein, 2: paraneoplastic Pemphigus (PNP) - Pemphigus types-desmosome, 3: desmoglein 1 ve 3-autoimmunity, 4: treatment-rituximab, 5: acantholysis-apoptosis, 6: quality of life-remission-relapse, 7: autoantibodies, 8: epidemiology-mortality, 9: corticosteroids). The most commonly studied subjects were determined to be pemphigus vulgaris (PV), pemphigus foliaceus (PF), autoimmunity, rituximab, PNP, desmoglein (desmoglein3-desmoglein1), autoantibodies, acantholysis, autoantibody, treatment, autoimmune disease, desmosome, ELISA, and immunofluorescence. The primary trending topic was rituximab drug, which is used in the treatment of Pemphigus. The other most studied trend topics were azathioprine drug used in treatment, intravenous immunoglobulin treatment, quality of life, mortality rates, Pemphigus herpetiformis, and wound healing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of retracted oncology papers from Chinese scholars and the reasons for retraction. METHODS: Data on retracted oncology papers from Chinese scholars published from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved from the Retraction Watch database. The retraction number and annual distribution, article types, reasons for retraction, retraction time delay, publishers, and journal characteristics of the retracted papers were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 2695 oncology papers from Chinese scholars published from 2013 to 2022 had been retracted. The majority of these papers were published from 2017 to 2020. In terms of article type, 2538 of the retracted papers were research articles, accounting for 94.17% of the total number of retracted papers. The main reasons for retraction were data, result, and image problems, duplicate publication, paper mills, author- and third-party-related reasons, plagiarism, false reviews, and method errors. The retraction time delay for the retracted papers ranged from 0 to 3582 days (median, 826 days). The retractions mainly occurred within the first 4 years after publication. A total of 77 publishers were involved in the retracted papers. In terms of journal distribution, 394 journals were involved in the retracted papers, of which 368 (93.40%) were included in the SCI database. There were 243 journals with an impact factor of <5 (66.03%). CONCLUSION: In the field of oncology, the annual distribution of retracted papers from Chinese scholars exhibited first an increasing and subsequently a decreasing trend, reaching a peak in 2019, indicating an improvement in the status of retraction after 2021. The main type of the retracted papers was research article, and the main reason for retraction was academic misconduct. The retractions were mainly concentrated in several major publishers and periodicals in Europe and the United States. Most of the journals had low-impact factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based medicine underpins medical and surgical practice, with level of evidence (LOE) being a key aspect that allows clinicians and researchers to better discriminate the methodological context by which studies are conducted and appropriately interpret their conclusions, and more specifically the strength of their recommendations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to reassess the LOE of articles published in plastic surgery journals. METHODS: To assess the overall LOE of publications from January 1 to December 31, 2021, a review of the following plastic surgery journals was performed: Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ), Annals of Plastic Surgery (Annals), Journal of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (JRPAS), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS), and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open (PRS GO). RESULTS: Of 3698 PUBMED articles, 1649 original articles and systematic reviews were analyzed. The average LOE for each journal was: ASJ 3.02 ± 0.94, Annals 3.49 ± 0.62, JPRAS 3.33 ± 0.77, PRS 2.91 ± 0.77, and PRS GO 3.45 ± 0.70. The collective average LOE was 3.28 ± 0.78. Only 4.4% were LOE 1 and 7.3% were LOE 2. Compared to past studies, PRS showed a significant LOE improvement (P = .0254), while ASJ and JPRAS saw nonsignificant changes; Annals experienced a significant decrease (P = .0092). CONCLUSIONS: ASJ and PRS showed the highest LOE among the journals analyzed. Despite this, low LOE studies remain prevalent in plastic surgery. This paper serves as a call to action for both researchers and academic journals to elevate the standard, offering several strategies to help improve the LOE in plastic surgery.

RESUMO

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an inherited autoinflammatory disease. One of the feared complications of FMF, amyloidosis is often correlated with an increased mortality rate. The severity of the disease is linked with different mutations in the MEFV gene that may favor different outcomes (amyloidosis, Bechet's disease…). Although several countries worldwide contribute remarkably to research related to FMF, Arab countries make up only a small part of this contribution. This study aims to estimate numerically the contribution of the Arab world to research conducted on FMF. PubMed is used to quantitate the number of FMF-related articles published by each Arab country from 2004 till 2019. The retrieved numbers are normalized with respect to each country's average population and average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and are also compared to those of some non-Arab countries having high FMF prevalence. In comparison with some non-Arab countries, the Arab world has a minor contribution of 3.80% to the total FMF-related publications, faced by 24.93% solely by Turkey. Out of total research done by Arab countries, FMF-related articles constitute no more than 0.133%. When normalized against the average population, Tunisia ranks first, followed by Lebanon. Similarly, normalizing the retrieved numbers of articles against average GDP shows that Tunisia and Lebanon come first and second, respectively. Only 8 Arab countries published a total of 13 articles concerning amyloidosis which makes 4.7% of the total Arabic FMF published articles. This study reflects an undoubtable need for more research to be conducted on FMF by the Arab countries, which suffer greatly from immense shortage in research productivity, due to the many obstacles and limitations these countries face every day.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Biostatistics are frequently used in research published in the domain of cardiothoracic surgery. The objective of this study was to describe the scope of statistical techniques reported in the literature and to highlight implications for editorial review and critical appraisal. METHODS: Original research articles published between January and April 2017 in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery were examined. For each article, the statistical method(s) reported were recorded and categorized by complexity. RESULTS: We reviewed 293 articles that reported 1068 statistical methods. The mean number of different statistical methods reported per article was 3.6 ± 1.9, with variation by subspecialty and journal. The most common statistical methods were contingency tables (in 59% of articles), t tests (49%), and survival methods (49%). Only 4% of articles used descriptive statistics alone. An introductory level of statistical knowledge was deemed sufficient for understanding 16% of articles, whereas for the remainder a higher level of knowledge would be needed. CONCLUSIONS: Contemporary cardiothoracic surgery research frequently requires the use of complex statistical methods. This was evident across articles for all cardiothoracic surgical subspecialties as reported in 3 high-impact journals. Routine review of manuscript submissions by biostatisticians is needed to ensure the appropriate use and reporting of advanced statistical methods in cardiothoracic surgery research.

Abstract Background The quantity and quality of Brazilian scientific output increases decade by decade. However, there is a tendency to undervalue Brazilian journals, illustrated by the low number of citations compared with texts in international journals, with the tacit justification that foreign articles are of superior quality. Objectives To investigate the differences in numbers of citations of Brazilian and international periodicals in three Brazilian journals from 2016 to 2020. Methods All articles published in the Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, in the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro, and in Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed. The references of these studies were analyzed, summing the total number of citations and classifying them as published in Brazilian or foreign journals. Results A total of 902 articles were analyzed, totaling 23,394 references, with a mean of 25.81 ± 8.59 references per article. Of these, 2,680 (11.45%) were Brazilian, equating to a mean of 2.95 ± 3.79 Brazilian references per article. Conclusions It is necessary to improve appreciation of Brazilian periodicals, especially among Brazilian researchers and institutions responsible for science funding.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Bibliometrics is a group of statistical and mathematical methods employed to measure and analyze the quantity and the quality of scientific articles, books, and other forms of publications. The objective of the present study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria (JBP) by listing its 100 most highly cited articles in the scientific literature and identifying their main characteristics in terms of authorship and research topics and design. METHODS: The 100 topcited references in the JBP were identified through a search with Google Scholar. The main author, last author, corresponding author, the total number of authors, gender of the authors, year of publication, research institution, geographic origin, language, and the research design and subject of each reference were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: A marked increase in the number of citations in the last 15 years, a relatively balanced distribution of publications among the Brazilian states and research centers, absence of gender bias among authors, and a varied range of published topics suggest a good current editorial performance by the JBP. Relative lack of systematic reviews and longitudinal studies, dearth of articles published in the English language, and modest participation of foreign authors were points requiring improvement. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that a survey of the 100 most cited articles in the JBP can provide a historical overview of the progress of this journal, as well as highlight the main obstacles, constraints, and challenges faced by its editors and authors.

BACKGROUND: Identifying ineffective practices that have been used in oncology is important in reducing wasted resources and harm. We sought to examine the prevalence of practices that are being used but have been shown in RCTs to be ineffective (medical reversals) in published oncology studies. METHODS: We cross-sectionally analyzed studies published in three high-impact oncology medical journals (2009-2018). We abstracted data relating to the frequency and characterization of medical reversals. RESULTS: Of the 64 oncology reversals, medications (44%) represented the most common intervention type (39% were targeted). Fourteen (22%) were funded by pharmaceutical/industry only and 56% were funded by an organization other than pharmaceutical/industry. The median number of years that the practice had been in use prior to the reversal study was 9 years (range 1-50 years). CONCLUSION: Here we show that oncology reversals most often involve the administration of medications, have been practiced for years, and are often identified through studies funded by non-industry organizations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In line with aging populations and increased application of anesthesia and surgery, perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) has received growing attention worldwide. Considerable researches into PND are being conducted; however, the quantity and quality of such researches have not been reported. Through a retrospective bibliometric analysis, this study aims to identify and characterize the top 100 cited publications on PND. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science database to find the top 100 cited articles focusing on PND. We collected bibliographic information, including year of publication, country of origin, article type, published journal, citation count, and authorship. To determine changes with time, we compared older and newest articles. RESULTS: The top 100 cited articles were published between 1955 and 2016; the number of citations ranged from 111 to 1248. The United States had the most published papers; clinical trial was the most common article type. The specialty journals of Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia were the two most cited journals. Newest articles had a comparable number of citations to older articles, but the former had higher annual citation rates, greater funding disclosures, more focus on basic research, and more open access publications. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a comprehensive overview of the most cited articles and highlights the increasing attention on PND. High-quality clinical trials with a greater journal impact factor receive more citations. However, there has been a growth in the number of basic science studies as an area of research with respect to the pathogenesis of PND.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: A courtesy author is an individual who has not met authorship criteria but is listed as an author. This practice is common and often seen as victimless. Because publications are used for funding and promotion decisions, it is critical to understand biases in this practice. METHODS: An anonymous survey was conducted from March to October 2020 of first and senior authors of publications from 2014 to 2015 in 8 surgical journals. Authors were surveyed about demographic data, practice setting, and courtesy author practices. RESULTS: Three hundred forty-one authors responded (16% response rate). 75% were from academic practice settings. 14% reported adding courtesy authors 5 or more times in the past year. Courtesy authors were more often male (80%, P = 0.023), older (75%), and of higher academic rank (65%) than first/senior authors. All author groups were >75% white. When a reason was reported, 46% added a courtesy author due to avoid retaliation; 64% to avoid awkwardness. 26% expected reciprocal authorship offers. 92% of respondents acknowledge understanding International Committee of Medical Journal Editors authorship criteria. Women were less common among those added from goodwill than those added from fear (P = 0.039.) When courtesy authors were of a lower rank than first/senior authors, they were nearly twice as likely to be female (P = 0.0056) or non-white (P = 0.0184.). CONCLUSION: Courtesy authors were more often male, older, and higher rank than first/senior authors. Fear of career consequences was a major motivator for including courtesy authors. Understanding the motivations and pressures leading to courtesy authorship will help to correct this practice.

Purpose: to describe speech therapy instruments of oral language evaluation published in Brazilian periodicals, and to analyze the validation procedures used. Method: Casuistry: All volumes from the periodicals Audiology Communication Research (ACR), Revista CEFAC (CEFAC), Revista Distúrbios da Comunicação (DIC) and Communication Disorders and Sciences (CoDAS) published from January/2016 to July/2019. Publishing's were selected from titles, abstracts and descriptors, to full text readings and then were categorized according to the following variables: periodical, volume/number, date, purpose (elaboration or translation/adaptation of oral language evaluation instruments), original language (in translation/adaptation cases), sample size and statistics techniques used (validity and reliability). Results: Most of the articles were intended for children and are intended to develop a new instrument. The predominance of studies that presented content validation is noteworthy; however, few performed the reliability test by alpha Cronbach. It was also found that only one study performed a sensitivity and specificity test and no study published in the studied period performed a predictive value calculation, likelihood ratio or ROC curve. Conclusion: the results indicate limitations in validation studies and suggest caution regarding the use of language assessment instruments, both in clinical activity and in research.

BACKGROUND: The number of research articles on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been strikingly increasing. This study aimed to explore the general trends and hotspots of HRQoL. METHODS: Based on the Web of Science database, research on HRQoL published between 2000 and 2019 were identified. A bibliometric analysis was performed based on the number of articles, citations, published journals, authors' addresses, and keywords. Descriptive analysis, visualization of geographic distribution and keyword clustering analysis were applied to the collected data. RESULTS: The annual number of articles showed growth over the past twenty years, but the annual total citations and annual citations per article were both in decreasing trends. Articles about HRQoL were more likely to be published in journals of multi-subject categories. The HRQoL research was mainly distributed across North America and Europe throughout the twenty years and ushered in a vigorous development worldwide after 2015. Cooperation strength between domestic institutions was much greater than that of international institutions. HRQoL research had six concentrated clusters: HRQoL, Depression, Obesity, Disability, Oncology, Fatigue. CONCLUSION: This study provided an overall perspective of global research trends and hotspots in HRQoL, and a potential insight for future research. HRQoL research had experienced significant increasing development during 2000-2019, especially the HRQoL measurement instruments, however, there were significant regional disparities in scientific output in HRQoL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite women constituting over half of new doctors, gender disparity remains an issue. Surgery has shown particularly slow progress towards gender parity. This study aimed to quantify gender representation within editorial boards of the highest ranking international general surgery journals. METHODS: Surgical journals were collated using two indices: SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and Journal Impact Factor (JIF). Non-general surgery journals were excluded. Journals were contacted, requesting gender editorial team demographics. Editorial board data were collected via journal websites on 28 November 2019. RESULTS: The top 25 general surgery journals according to SJR and JIF ranking methods were determined, identifying 28 unique journals. Editorial board data were publicly available for 27 of these 28 surgical journals, and were examined. Women accounted for 20.2 per cent (568 of 2816) of total editorial board positions. Women constituted 11 per cent (4 of 36) of editor-in-chief positions, 32 per cent (29 of 92) of deputy editors, and 19.1 per cent (369 of 1935) of general editorial board positions. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate gender disparity within editorial boards of the most prominent general surgery journals.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: A scientometric analysis produced in ophthalmic genetics and gene therapy research is lacking. The purpose of this study is to present a holistic analysis of ophthalmic genetics literature. Methods: The data used in this study were obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection. All published documents between 1975-2019 were included. The data exported from WoS enabled the extensive details of ophthalmic genetics related literature including countries, institutions, authors, citations and keywords. Scientometric network maps of keywords and also country and institution co-authorships were created with free software. Global contributions of the countries to the ophthalmic genetics literature were shown by a graphic. Results: The search query revealed a total of 2322 documents. Most of the documents were original articles (75.75%). USA was the leading country by producing 45.39% of all documents in ophthalmic genetics research followed by UK, Germany, China and France. Pennsylvania University was the most contributing institution in the literature (5.25%) followed by University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital. The average citations per item was 29.4. The most used keywords over a 40-year period were 'family', 'cell', 'photoreceptor' and 'expression'. Conclusions: USA and UK dominated the ophthalmic genetics research. A substantial increase in the number of published documents in this field were observed after 2010.
